About Xandad/Brian
I've been a part of the evolution of Computer Generated animation since around 1979, when I was using Graphics Magician to animate "Shape tables" (who remembers those!??)
My directorial debut was in 1984 with our Senior Class Film. This was a knock-off homage to a bunch of popular movies at that time. It was shot (poorly) on a hand wound 16mm camera, and edited, with razor blades and tape, at my parents kitchen table. The original soundtrack was played back off of cassette and had to be synced live as the film was projected. The guy who had the light meter didn't know how to use it. Apparently, neither did I.
In college I studied Computer Science and Art- there were no "Motion Graphics" or "Design" degrees for animation in the mid '80s. At least not for everyone, like today.
I was also very involved in the theatre program, acting in numerous roles, and elected "Student Director" for the 1987-88 season. On closing night of my production of Neil Simon's "California Suite", one of my actors took ill and I was forced to play the role myself! I think I did okay. :)
A Co-Op job at The Cincinnati Bell Telephone company led to a job in their television studio in 1986.... I moved from Kentucky to Los Angeles in 1989... the rest is history.
Since then I have lived through and grown up with nearly every facet of the production/post-production industry. I witnessed the transition from analog to digital first-hand.
Early on, my focus was 3D Animation, Compositing, VFX, etc. However, I enjoy learning new things, so I have actively pursued a working knowledge and understanding of many other disciplines within the realm of television production. These would include editing, set-design, camera work, lighting, video equipment and engineering, DVD authoring, shooting and creating 3D-Stereoscopic content, website design/coding, and much more... I even build my own machines. I'm as comfortable on a PC as I am on a Mac or Linux/Unix workstation. I've used them all... During this time, I've done everything from corporate graphics to simulations of car accidents for litigation purposes. I've produced special effects for numerous music videos, and I spent two years on the third shift cleaning dust and scratches while digitally restoring Cinderella, Pinocchio, and Bambi for Disney. One of my companies produced visual content for a couple of video games. In 1996, I started freelancing at this wacky startup network called The WB Television Network. I animated the original Buffy The Vampire logo. I was hired full-time in '98, and I have been here ever since. As a "Director of Animation," I had the privilege of working with incredibly talented writers, producers, and editors to create many of the classic Kids' WB promos. I miss those guys. Also, to clarify, The WB TV Network changed to The CW Television Network in 2006, but for some of us, the only thing that changed was the logo... and where I parked my car. :)
In 2020, when COVID shut everything down, I was put in charge of the On-Air Promo department at The CW. Working remotely was a challenge, but we never missed a deadline under the 3 years of my watch. The Nexstar buyout of The CW was pivotal for me. My job of 25 years went away. So, now, I'm using the free time to further my personal projects. (I have quite a few!) You can see some of my personal stuff here at xandad.com and tons of promos from the Kids' WB days on my
